Fishing

Kouvola offers fine and versatile possibilities for fishing. Across the area flow the biggest salmon and sea trout river in southern Finland – River Kymi – and several other water ways from large lakes to smaller lakes and ponds as well as rivers and different kinds of water routes.

The fish stock in the area is outstanding. Depending on destination, fish that you can catch with lures and traps, include salmon, trout, grayling, powan, pike perch, pike and perch, and it is possible to do different kinds of fishing from trolling and spinning to angling, jigging and fly fishing.

Lure fishing areas

The Kouvola region has several calm water ways that are excellent areas for lure fishing. These include e.g. the lure fishing areas of Kyykoski rapids, Isokäyrä lake, Vuohijärvi lake,
Karijärvi lake, Pyhäjärvi lake, Niska-Suolajärvi lake, Iitti municipality and Valkeala-Utti area.

Canoeing

For canoeing enthusiasts Kouvola region has to offer, for example the naturally beautiful route in Valkeala, Väliväylä, which passes from the lake Saimaa to River Kymi river with total length of 113 kilometres. In addition, opportunities for canoeing are offered in the canoeing routes of Savonselkä and River Kymi.

Other Nature Destinations

Jaala Lookout Tower

The lookout tower in Metsäkylä has an impressive view over the lake Pyhäjärvi. When the weather is fine it is possible to see all the way to Lahti and Kouvola.

Heisanharju

Heisanharju is a magnificent entity formed by transversal eskers and lakes with clear water. The area has e.g. a nature trail, a campfire site, a hut and a lean-to. A central part of Heisanharju is protected under the Nature Conservation Act.

Vuolenkoski Village

In Vuolenkoski you can still find traditional village idyll. The village is an excellent destination for hiking in the nature and for fishing. There are also some historical rock paintings in the waterway area.

The lively village has e.g. a guest boat harbour, a splendid catering restaurant, Lossirannan kartano, which was opened last summer, and accommodation, conference and café services. There is a waterway connection to Vuolenkoski from the lake Päijänne.

Ahvionkoski Rapids

The River Kymi is the best river in the southern Finland for white water rafting. The Ahvionkoski rapids situated in Anjala and favoured by canoeists feature dazzlingly beautiful sceneries.

Kuovinkallio

The Kuovinkallio hiking site is situated in a beautiful place on the shore of the River Kymi directly upstream of the best rapids for canoeing in the River Kymi, the Ahvionkoski rapids. The site has a place for going ashore, a lean-to shelter and a campfire place.
