Father
Father talks about dementia and its many effects on people’s lives.
In this play, dementia is treated with understanding and compassion. The performance may even be a therapeutic experience for people struggling with this illness. The great insight of this text is that the events are seen from the perspective of a person with dementia. The viewer finds themselves in a confusing situation like a sick person – they cannot know what is true and what is an illusion.
The play has been described as a tragic farce. Florian Zeller’s play FATHER was awarded the Moliere Prize for best play in France in 2014. It is one of the most successful plays of the millennium.
