Saturday’s 90th birthday wishes
Saturday Wishes is the radio’s longest-running music program. In the fall of 2025, it will be 90 years since the first broadcast.
There was a time when the radio was the center of the home. The green light of the tube radio invited people to news, devotions, sports, listening to music and other culture.
There was a time when Saturday cleaning, baking and sauna were organized in such a way that not a single minute was wasted listening to Saturday’s Wishes.
There was a time when the lighter part at the end of the program offered almost the only rhythmic music moment in the radio
weekly program. Although older people sometimes avoided the hits at the end, that program has always been a family
bringer and evokes warm memories.
And it still gathers listeners of different ages to guess the performers, songs and their authors.
Today, there is no need to guess the performers: Mari Palo and Hannu Lehtonen interpret great favorites from different decades.
And in the traditional way, we proceed from light classical through operetta and musical to songs and
strokes. The concert pianist Seppo Hovi will tell you about each song, but only after you have
quietly remembered their names and authors, perhaps even the original performers.
Of course, you can just reminisce and let your thoughts fly to the past. Music gives you
wings.
