Karl Jenkins: Stabat Mater (arr. John Gibbons)
Stabat Mater, a 13th-century poem describing the suffering of Jesus’ mother Mary at the moment of her son’s crucifixion, has been given an impressive musical form in the treatment of the Welshman Karl Jenkins – not forgetting other ancient writings from which the composer has drawn for the whole. In the work, traditional Western musical tradition meets ethnic instruments and world music harmonies, and Latin meets several other ancient languages, such as Jesus’ native language, Aramaic. This rich, multi-layered work of music is presented by the amazing Aija Puurtinen and conductor Ilkka Aunu, with the choir Donne Mature & Viri Perfecti.
