Ajassa photo exhibition in Myllykoski
AT TIME is a photography exhibition by Myllykoski residents Unto Mentula and Kalle Salonen, whose black and white photos were shot on film, the films were developed by themselves and the images were produced in a traditional darkroom.
The subject of Salonen’s photos is Prague in 1989. Mentula has portraits and views on display, the most recent photo of which is from this year.
Both photographers are experienced enthusiasts and have held their own exhibitions and participated in joint exhibitions.
There is considerably less automation in the equipment for film photography and darkroom work compared to digital photography and image editing with applications using artificial intelligence. If there are 12 frames on a roll of film, you should consider what to photograph and when to press the shutter. If you want more or less light in a part of the image in the darkroom, it is done manually. While in Photoshop you can correct a mistake by taking a step back, in the darkroom an incorrect paper ends up in the trash and you have to start the work from scratch.
In the field conquered by digital photography, film cameras were often put up for sale and darkrooms with their equipment were dismantled. Salonen and Mentula now shoot almost exclusively with a digital camera, but occasionally they load film into an old camera and start going retro.
Welcome to the opening of the exhibition on 12.8.2025 at 6-7 pm
