Chamber Jazz Quartet

After World War II, jazz in the United States was in a state of flux. Several new styles emerged, one of which was “cool jazz”. This style, which developed on the West Coast, combined the frenetic jazz with calmer melodic lines and “intelligence” borrowed from classical music. The most famous style creator was saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, whose quartet made a breakthrough in Los Angeles in 1952.

Mulligan’s original quartet included a trumpet, baritone saxophone, double bass and drums. A characteristic feature was the absence of a chord instrument, i.e. a piano or guitar, which gave the sound openness and expanded the freedom of the soloist. A couple of years later, the trumpet was replaced by a trombone.

The Chamber Jazz Quartet is similar in composition and bows to its predecessors. The program consists of works that were – or could have been – by the Mulligan Quartet.
