Silent Bridges

Silent Bridges

What happens when life offers an unexpected opportunity to love?

Silent Bridges is a musical about a middle-aged housewife’s relationship with a mysterious, traveling nature photographer. The world-famous story is an emotional portrayal of illicit love and the decision that must be made.

The events take place in the American countryside in the 1960s. Francesca lives a family-oriented life surrounded by a hardworking husband, teenage children and helpful neighbors. Italian-born Francesca has once ended up in the heartlands of America from the ruins of war and through marriage.

One day, photographer Robert, who is used to seeing the world through the lens of a camera, gets lost in the yard. When these two outsiders meet, they experience something so unique that the four days they spend together will affect them for the rest of their lives.

The musical, written by Marsha Norman and composed by Jason Robert Brown, is based on Robert James Waller’s world-famous best-selling novel, which was made into a film starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood in 1995.

As a musical, the work is relatively new: it premiered on Broadway in 2014. Kouvola Theatre is presenting the musical for the second time in Finland.

“Silent Bridges is a beautiful description of the surprises that life sometimes throws at us. A housewife who is used to taking care of herself feels that she is being seen in a new way. Responsible reason and complex emotions are the measure of each other. The touching story does not moralize, but rather celebrates the power of love.” – Director Jukka Keinonen

Premiere 4.9.2025 on the main stage of Kouvola Theatre.
