Alvar Aalto in Kouvola
Tehtaanmäki, Kouvola
Alvar Aalto’s most important works in Kouvola are located in Inkeroinen. The buildings designed by Aalto date from 1937-1956. In addition to the industrial buildings on Tehtaanmäki, the complex includes semi-detached and terraced houses on Rantalinja and Tervalinja, three engineering houses and apartment buildings for factory workers. On Kasarminmäki, you can also see the gateposts designed by a young architect for the garrison area during his military service.
The area is completed by the Tehtaanmäki school, completed in 1940, and the Karhunkankaan housing estate, many of whose residential buildings were completed in 1938. The Tehtaanmäki School is the only primary school still in operation, designed by Aalto. The 1937 plan designed by Aalto covered the entire centre of Inkeroinen, but was only implemented in Karhunkankaja and the area around the factory.
