Two cities of Kymijoki – cycling route
Take a cycling trip from Kouvola to Kotka along the Kymi River. The Kymi River flows through the province from Kouvola to Kotka and then into the sea in five river branches. Cycling through the river valley you will experience the peace of nature and the roar of history. Grab your bike and set off, before you know it you are already in another city. The Kymi River Two Cities cycling route starts from the Kouvola railway station and heads southwards following the riverbank. Along the way, history breathes, rapids roar and the mind and body relax. Along the route you will pass large paper mills, small rural villages with fields and several beautiful rapids and river landscapes. On the southern part of the route, at Langinkoski in Kotka, you can jump on the Tuula ship, which takes you to Katariina Meripuisto, and from there continue along parks and seashores towards the centre of Kotka.
It takes an average of two days to cycle from Kouvola to Kotka. Upon reaching Kotka, cyclists have the option of returning to Kouvola along the same route or alternatively by local train. But if you are enthusiastic enough and pedaling is not feeling your calves, you can continue the route via the western branch of the Kymijoki River (Hirvikoskenhaara), exploring the two ironworks environments created by generations of patrons. The route ends in Kouvola. On the route you will encounter the present and the past. This section of the route offers a charming combination of the river valley’s industrial history, beautiful grain fields and nature. The duration of this section is 2-3 days.
