Ankkapurha Industrial Museum – over 150 years of forest industry history

The Ankkapurha Industrial Museum invites you on a journey through time to the over 150-year history of the current Stora Enso Anjalankoski mills and the factory community. The museum operates on the original factory site in Lohisaari, Ankkapurha, where the first woodworking mill was built in 1872. Within the walls of the old cardboard factory, a unique view opens up of the development of the forest industry and the everyday life, life and living conditions of factory workers over generations.

The absolute gem of the museum is the Pahvimankeli, Finland’s first continuously operating and also Finland’s oldest permanently museumised cardboard machine. The machine, which started up in 1897, served in production for over 80 years until it was finally stopped in 1978. This rare industrial heritage site forms the museum’s most valuable entity. The museum opened to the public in 1997.

In the exhibitions, the stages of the factory’s history come to life through hundreds of photographs. The photo sets shed light on the most significant milestones of the factories, the everyday lives of the workers and the development of the factory community. In addition, a comprehensive compilation of the events of 1918 and their impact on the local factory community is on display.

The Ankkapurha Industrial Museum offers a fascinating experience for those interested in industrial heritage as well as for anyone who wants to learn about the story of a Finnish factory community and the significance of the forest industry over a period of over a century and a half.

In the 2026 season, the museum will be open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 17. Admission to the museum is free.
