Three air divisions operated on the Red side during the Civil War. One of these, the central front air division, was based in Valkeala Utti until April 1918.

This little-known and previously misinterpreted part of Finnish military aviation history is illuminated by former military helicopter pilot Major Jani Kortesluoma. His book Kouvola’s Red Eagles was published in the summer of 2023 and is the most thorough study of Red aviation operations to date. Kortesluoma tells about the phases of the flight department, especially in relation to Valkeala.
